The Olšina Nature Trail is one of the most beautiful places I have visited in Leipzig so far.
For the most part, it runs around the pond of the same name, whose history dates back to the 15th century. It is one of those places that has evolved over the years without human intervention, and this is what gives it its endless charm.
The pond is surrounded by wetlands, mixed forests and peat bogs. The banks of the pond are home to many different birds, plants and other animals. Personally, it reminds me of nature in Canada, the Great Lakes region. The area through which the trail passes was inaccessible to the public for many years and only opened in 2016. Much of the trail is on boardwalks and real natural terrain. Visitors thus have direct contact with the natural wealth of the Olšina National Natural Monument, the Boletice Bird Area or the Natura 2000 protected area. I myself was surprised how the conditions on the trail change due to the seasons and the current weather. So don't expect an easy and trouble-free walk, you have to take into account the current conditions and your own physical condition. You may find, as I did, that the paths will be partially under water and you will be wading through mud in the woods. This is what makes the trail interesting and, I would say, adventurous for kids who like water. I think it's the perfect hike for someone who likes untouched nature and doesn't mind getting a little wet or dirty on a hike.
The trail also includes a visitor centre, where you will find a very nice exhibition with interactive elements and haptic models. For example, children can play games to identify birds, there are different trunk cakes with tree rings, fruit and cone patterns, etc.
